One of the most potent lessons of the road is how acts of kindness come back to you twofold and threefold and more.
There have been innumerable examples of this in my life, but the one that comes to mind first is the American couple I met on the train from Rome to Vienna, when I was fresh out of college and wandering around Europe. They didn’t know me, but we hit it off during the long rail ride and they ended up inviting me to two epic dinners in that storied city – dinners that showed me a side of Vienna I could never have seen on my backpack budget.
